I am one of those people who reads all pages in book, sometimes in a random order, but no page has ever been deprived of my attention. Of late, I have had the misfortune of picking up books which I can not finish, even if I try. Either they put me to sleep or in a state of world-weariness or worse make housecleaning tasks more appealing. A series of bad reviews are scheduled for this webpage. In this depressing state of affairs, Mary Higgins Clark brought a breadth of fresh air. I was shopping for shoes, when I grabbed All Around the Town. It is a story of a woman who was sexually abused as a child and now is suspected of murder. If not her, one of her personalities. A thrilling book where the murderer suffers from multiple personality disorder (MPD, which is now termed Dissociative Identity Disorder). I think Sidney Sheldon's Tell Me Your Dreams was my first book on MPD. I find it an exciting disease. A person with MPD has an interesting life -- she could be a cool headed banker, an artist and a homemaker all in one. She is forgiven for any crimes that she may have committed. Think about it. In our normal lives, we all have multiple personalities. The way we are in front of our parents is different from the way we are in office or even in an evening party! But it becomes a disorder when the different personalities pan out without the person's conscious knowledge. Say what you may, MPD person has two extra perks over a normal person -- they are very good in their different personas and they can be forgiven for behaving so erratically. I do not imagine my mother would ever tolerate me if I behave as boisterous at home as I am in an evening get together.
In all seriousness, MPD is a terrible disease which is often caused by childhood trauma. Patients with MPD have had a hard life and continue to live with so many problems. Imagine an "Inside Out" movie adaptation, where Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust would play with Riley's emotion console without consulting each other. The movie would change from comedy adventure genre to disaster film genre. It is writers like Clark and Sheldon whose beautiful novels have made the MPD idea deceptively exciting. But then they would make even the idea of having a car break down thrilling. I have another Clark waiting in the pipeline. I do no wish to give out more details of these book(s). They are the typical feel good books, ideal for travels and holidays. Speaking of which, my 2017 summer break is close to an end, I am off to pick another book.
